We All Need Devices Stuck to our Heads, Why?

One would need to be from the planet Head up your Butt to not notice that people of every conceivable ilk have a device of some sort stuck onto the sides of their heads. The question though, is why?

It seems that we have come to think that we need to be available 24 hours a day, every day including Kwanzaa, Pentecost and the evening before the Daylight Savings changeover. Now in the past, only people awaiting a heart transplant or an organ of any kind needed to be near the phone for obvious reasons.
